The American/Mexican band The Chasm have built a strong fanbase, and the new album scheduled for 2009 is set to be an exciting event.

This reviewer is soon about to fall unconcious from the rampant anticipation of the 9th chapter of The Chasm's musical adventure, and checking the website every day since the announcement last year (2008) that a new album was in the making only fuels the fire.

A second more recent announcement in February 2009 that the album was now in the final stages of creation, with only the mastering to do and artwork to finalise, has no doubt has raised the heads of many metallers and devout Chasm fans alike.

The Spell Of Expectation

A gradual rise in confidence and bravery culminated in the pure focus of their art and last album, 2004's The Spell Of Retribution, which demonstrated the abyss between this band and many of their contemporaries. Many may have thought TSOR to be the last in the line of albums as it was the eighth outing and an apex of creativity and quality.

The albums have obviously evolved in terms of tightness and production as have the recordings of most, but the pace as also picked up around the time of Procession To The Infraworld (1999) and thereafter. This turning point album saw a change from dark, twisted and doomy tales of foreboding and sorrow to more upbeat and glorious tales of war and battle.

The epic expanse has remained a constant as has the spectral and cosmic spirituality of the lyrics and overall sound. Hence hypothesising the styling of the upcoming album should be straightforward but hypothesising the musical approach may be a bit tougher and could see past elements fused with newer ideas or a different angle.

Where There's A Will, There's Death Metal

However The Chasm are in this to keep metal elite and their 'iron willed death metal' will probably not waver or pander to what is going outside their sphere. When it comes to recording, most likely the band will shut off the world and do what they do best.

If the tantalising video at Lux Inframundis is anything to go by, this could be something special. After being recorded in the Ensomberoom Studios in Texas, vocalist and guitarist Daniel Corchado's Lux Inframundis will handle artwork and additional audio details, with a springtime release pending.

Lets hope our modern day Aztec warriors will stick to their guns and blow listeners away yet again, while they're still coming to terms with the sheer brilliance of the aforementioned album. Expect a full review here when the opus is finally released to its salivating public.
